Entrance Requirements

The Department of Biomedical Informatics has a number of requirements for application, including minimum grade point averages, test scores and prerequisite classes.

Required grade point average and standardized testing results:

* Undergraduate degree with a grade point of 3.3 or better (B+ average)
* Graduate Record Examination (GRE) -- Min. average score of 60%
(The GRE may be waived if you already have a masters or doctoral degree. Also, US physicians may substitute the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score.)

Required prerequisite classes & equipment:

* Applicants must take a college-level computer programming course at an accredited educational institution prior to admission; this course must be verifiable on an official transcript.
* Applicants must take a college-level statistics course at an accredited educational institution prior to admission; this course must be verifiable on an official transcript. All incoming students are also required to take BMI 6105, Statistics for Biomedical Informatics.

* Students accepted into the program are required to bring a Pentium Class laptop computer with the Windows 2000 or newer operating system, or an Intel-based Apple Mac laptop.

International student requirements:

*Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) -- minimum score of 100 for internet-based test (iBT). (equivalent to a minimum of 600 for the paper-based test or 250 for the computer-based test)
* Test of Spoken English (TSE) -- minimum score of 50 (This exam may be required by the Admissions Committee after a telephone interview.)
